Practice, Practice, Practice

That's what it's been about 2day. I came in 2 work at 7:30 this morning and worked straight till almost 1 o'clock, when I went 2 lunch . I know that's pretty long, but I guess I was in a workaholic mood or something. I also practiced my final in the Fishbowl room, which proved I definitely need 2 practice it before hand. Overall though, Friday was just , with nice vibes and great breeze. By around 4 o'clock, about 7 of us interns ended up gathered around in the PC labs, just conversing about a lot of things in general, which was pretty nice (and different lol) . Eventhough we're kind of late for the mingling and small talk (being that there is only 2.5 days left of this internship), it was better than not all.

Thursday(The Final One)

(At least in regards 2 work) Why can't it be Friday? What a busy, busy, busy day. I worked extra, extra hard on my final 2day. It's officially just about ready . Now I just need 2 make a few more adjustments, 2 try and jazz it up a bit. I finally regained some of my walking abilities 2day(lol) and there's no practice 2morrow, so that's partially a plus.

No Pain No Gain?

Well what if you already have the pain? And lots of it? I've been in pain since the end of day one of practice , but I'm not complaining because it's better than know sports action at all. (And a reminder 2 all...tennis is NOT a girly, no action sport, if it is 2 you, then your definitely, doing 98% of it,make that 99% WRONG...ok, done venting, lol) 2day @ work, the "Allyie's" told me that I was walking like , which in several ways, was kinda true, and funny. Still I thought I was walking like a person may walk without knee caps, but I guess Frankenstein works. Ok, enough about me...my final is going well and I feel like all the bits and pieces are finally coming 2gether. I'll work really hard on it 2morrow 2 make sure it's ready for the practice presentation on Friday.

Long Short Day

Work went by quick 2day. I continued working on my final. After that, I finally got myself 2gether 2 ask some wise questions 2 Dr. Richmond. Then:
~Made one last wise crack @ Alvin since he's leaving 2day(sorry, had 2 do it)
~Headed 2 tennis practice by 2:45

~Was 4 minutes late 4 practice(don't ask why because I don't know either)

~Resulting in my a half mile in the hot sun (may not sound like a lot, but it was 4 me)

We've Gotta Work It Out

(That would definitely be my song for 2day...the version that Beyonce sings.) What a busy, busy day full of momentum, movement, and great ...yet no energy 2 back it all up. Tennis practice has finally started, but I'm still really rusty. I wish I had gotten a chance 2 practice this summer. After a 2hr. practice, as soon as I got home, my dad wanted 2 take my sisters 2 play tennis and so we did. I got a chance 2 practice with this man whose serve was pretty good , and I was actually returning them with better placement than usual...but it still needs a lot of work. As far as work goes, it went by pretty fast also. 2day was the earliest I've been 2 work (probably because I had no choice since I have 2 get 2 practice by 3 o'clock everyday) . I made it 2 work @ a record breaking time of 7:15 this morning(Applause please...thanks, lol) Ok gotta go.

Road Trip #3-Conclusion

I was able 2 show my face at work 2day and I'm glad I did. 2day was our field trip 2 Kodak's headquarters on State street, which indeed was more than we expected. (lol)It seemed more like a hotel than a Kodak building...especially when compared 2 the other Kodak buildings that I have been in(the exact opposite). While there, we looked at several new Kodak digital cameras and some of the new user friendly software that they have for home development of your own photos. We also had a demo of the little Kodak booth that you see in Wal-Mart, Wegmans, and any other store that lets you develop your pictures . After the demonstration, we tried out their 3D race car game, which was pretty good. Then,, we watched some promos in their java shop, setup room and that was also nice. It seems like about 98% of what we watch in movies is also green screen effects. I guess you can say that our imagination and thinking-out-of-the-box skills have drastically increased...especially when compared 2 about 10-15 years ago. Before we left, we all got up close (no personal) with the Oscar, Emmy, and several other trophies that Kodak was awarded with. When we left Kodak, we went to eat at a place that goes by the name of Jimmy Macs(right in the High Falls area) The food was ok I guess, but I kept it safe with some chicken fingers, since I still wasn't feeling so well. When we returned 2 RIT, I just worked on my final again, and watched the clock. Hopefully I feel a better 2morrow...enough 4 the Carifest Festival. Although small, it still a fun, and your bound 2 bump into someone you know...especially if you live in the city.

Monday Again

Let's see, nothing much happened 2day. (And I think that was the overall status in the building...at least as far as the interns are concerned) I basically just continued working on my final. Plus, I was pretty late 2day arriving for work because (including myself) it seemed like everyone in our house was off from such a long, "energy-sucking" weekend (...that's what I'll call it~but still, it was a fun weekend). The College and Careers was a great experience and I'm glad I attended. The sessions I attended were Graphic Design, Imaging Science (of course...lol), and Photography Polaroid Transfer (or something like that). I also learned some more tricks that I can perform using Adobe Photoshop , but I'm pretty sure I only know about 30% or less of what that software is capable of. As far as majors are concerned, maybe I'll inform you about my status at the end of this internship. One thing that I'll say though is that RIT is still in the loop as one of my choices. And lastly, I finally got the chance 2 update This Thing because I had about a week's worth 2 update.

Memory Loss Pt. 2

All that I can recall is staying home this evening when my family went 2 the movies because I was preparing for this weekend. I had a feeling that Friday would go kind of fast. Miss Busy Body

Yap, that's what I felt like 2day because it seemed like my time was used much more productively, esp. when compared to the last couple of days. I felt like I was on a roll 2day, mainly in regards to working on my final; so much so that when asked 2 do a favor from Ally, I seemed pretty hesitant. But in the end, I did help her when she asked me 2 do a 45 minute survey in the visual perception lab , which had a lot of "dots" involved and I lot of work for these eyes of mine. At the end, I was rewarded with Soft Baked Pepperidge Farm Oatmeal raisin (not bad). And then, right after lunch, I had conversation with Sue Chan. We were just talking about the new Biomedical building, admiring the construction workers' will to work outside in the hot sun(eventhough they get paid for it) for 8hrs.(give or take a few more), and the authenticity of the way RIT has been built. There's not too many buildings (esp. houses) anymore that still use cement and bricks for more than just the base/frame of the project.

Caribana was fantastic, but I doubt I can show pics because you def. won't get the full affect unless you were actually there(Sorry). But for those who attended the event, they'll know that it was def. worth the wait. The parade itself lasted all day Saturday from 10AM to about 8PM, but Caribana is still going on as we speak. It lasts for about 2 weeks and ends at the end of 2day(or the beginning of 2morrow, all depending on how much you like 2 party ...plus 2day is a holiday in Canada so kudos for them). I'll def. remember this one, and I hope I can make it 2 next year's.

As far as work is concerned, it was back 2 work on my final presentation on this supernova stuff, but it's kind of funny that I didn't feel like the brightest star 2day...extra tired(cause: Caribana donation of all of my energy...pretty much, but I should be ok 2morrow). And eventhough I was feeling pretty slow 2day, I was still able 2 pull off learning a few tricks with on my own and actually understand it(yay). I def. am glad, once again, that I am getting a chance 2 use that software because even with the ones we have at home, there's never any time for me 2 actually work on it unless it truly is apart of my agenda like it is now. And then out of nowhere 2day, Joe Pow, introduced this man(sorry, can't recall his name at this time) 2 all of the interns in the computer lab, including myself and had us give the gentleman a quick/long overview including the who's, what's, where's, why's, and how's of our individual projects and extra questions on top of that. But maybe that was just meant 2 be a practice for us for the real thing. Well till 2morrow, that's that.

As far as work is concerned, it was a very slow day. By around 2 o'clock though, I spoke 2 Dr. Richmond about photoshop ideas and with his help, I think I've progressed a bit for that task. I'm glad I'm finally able 2 take the time and opportunity to learn this software(since I'm usually too busy during the school year) because I'm pretty sure it will be useful in the near future(still pretty loss though, but I'm still googling, esp. "Adobe Photoshop 4 Dummies"...lol). Well 2night's the night when my family and I head over 2 Toronto 2 rest up for Caribana(which is 2morrow). I haven't gone 2 it in about 5 years, so let's just say I've been anticipating for this event for quite some time. Can't wait...And I'm sure It'll be worth the wait because this year's dancehall reggae, and soca music has been on fire and is still blazin. Ok, gotta go; enjoy your weekend.

Thursday/Friday(?)

I say that because it sort of felt like a Friday 2day...too bad it isn't. Anyways, 2day I worked on my final presentation(that's probably what I'll be saying for the next couple of weeks). And I think it's safe 2 say that I have completed the task of the histograms on the given data. I also stressed myself about trying to get my mom's fax # and after finally getting it, either her fax machine was off that morning, or the fax machine was just taking too long. So I just scratched the whole idea. Near the end of the day, Ally and I went to Bldg. 77 2 drop off my application for College and Careers. Then we went to the coffee shop to only end up finding asign hanging on the door. After that, we were "followed" all the way back 2 our Bldg., all the way 2 the second floor(='s a mess/no comment, lol). Unfortunately, I didn't get home till about 11PM because we ended up visiting some people, plus went 2 pick up the dreaded school supplies(AHHH!) You know what that means...But for a good note, only 2 dayz till
Caribana, yay.

Road Trip #2

Our second trip was to a manufacturing company that specializes in contact lenses and that company goes by the name of CooperVision. In fact they hold the #3 position out of the top 5 companies regarding their field of work. Technically though, they mainly specialize in toric contact lenses, which are ring/doughnut(which we had 2day) shaped. Because they spend majority of their time in this industry, they do not require high volume machinery which is most likely why they still use assembly lines and require roughly 300 workers per shift, leaving them with most of their expenses in labor. Regardless, their output of contact lenses is approximately 16 million. After that, we went 2 for lunch and I don't think anyone left without having one of their famous root beers.

When we got back, it was back to work of course, including This Thing.

2day was the launch of the Discovery @ 10:34 "to be exact"(but then again, not really). (lol~may be an inside joke 4 me, but I just had to use it). We watched that and it was pretty interesting how the technology for the use of creating and viewing images has evolved over time. So much so, that we saw a pretty clear picture until the fuel engines/missiles/boosters detached from the actual space shuttle. After that, three others and I were forced (lol) to be interviewed by Fox News regarding the shuttle launch and the internship program that we are all involved in. Then it was back to my lonely histograms, but I did get to work on my final presentation for a couple hours. And for some reason, which I later found out about, Dr. Richmond was M.I.A. till about 2:30, but that's okay...there wasn't anything significant or special that I immediately needed to cover with him. (Dr. Richmond...hope you get some good rest)

Ok, today, I was extremely tired at work.I basically felt like I was sleepwalking all day(although very productive). Yet still, I managed to do at least 10 histograms for more analysis with the supernova data and created about 5 more separate files with(...and get my usual cup of ice from Ben & Jerry's). I don't know if my procedures were the quickest way or not, but that was the way I finally found, that worked 4 me. After work, I drove home again...Definitely less hectic and tense than yesterday. More regarding this thing 2morrow.

A Post-It's Worth(Ok, Maybe Next Time)

Today, Mr. Richmond came back, explained 2 me,(in detail+I did a bit of research also) why exactly I'm forming and analyzing this supernova database. He also gave me some great analagies and reference pictures 2 visualize why he is questioning the given data about various galaxies, near and far 2 (a Telescope) such a large extent. Afterwards, I went back 2 my file and restructured the histograms so they could show a more accurate comparison. In between that, I picked up the check that I lost, came back, worked some more, and then went home. Lastly, this evening, I drove my family 2 Charlotte Beach (my mom drove also), while my dad(in the passenger seat), tried 2 scare the daylights outta me, by "worrying" so loudly. But overall everyone else thought I did fine+I didn't hit anyone else's car like I usually do(lol...just kidding). Ok, I'll continue this thing 2morrow.

Let's see; it was more of a torpid day, especially in regards to work. Since I had already completed my tasks for the excel file and Dr. Richmond was unavailable today(that's ok...hope you enjoyed your "guests"), I just worked on some final presentation stuff again, etc., etc. Then, I gazed at some more galaxy pics @ hubble.org & heritage...By 3 o'clock, it was that time again, some v-ball of course(volleyball ppl...lol), but I think I did worse then last time. And after I got home, I finally had the chance to play tennis(yay!). But I haven't played in almost a yr., so we'll just say that I'm a bit rusty, but it was better than not playing at all. Ok, that's it for now.

Pretty calm day again. My advisor, Mr. Richmond, will sort of be out/busy until Wednesday, so I'm basically on my own. But, not to fear because I do have work to do: research on supernovae , galaxies , and all that good stuff. His absence just means that I have a short term leave from my "favorite" excel file~Definately NOT complaining. So until he's back, my focus will be on this thing and my research for an enlightening future final presentation.

Road Trip

Let's C...
Today, we visited an optics cooperation that is located on Science Pkwy (what a coincidence huh). They specialize in lasers, lense coating and creating very accurate, "clean", high-tech lenses that can be used for things like DVD players all the way to high tech cameras or vice-versa. Basically, their field is very high-tech, can be pretty secretive at times, is challenging, yet may be fun for "several", and lastly benefits them by creating products that are $1,000 tor roughly $150,000(some kool pts I guess). Well after we left there(By the way, the company is called Melles Griot) with our parting gifts(lol...thank you), we stopped for lunch @ Pizza Hut (ok not this one, but close enough)...then it was back to my favorite computer station to do the usual:research, configuring(just a little bit), and something else, oh yah of course, that wonderful excel spreadsheet ( description: chained...lol, just kidding).
...Well that's it for now, I have other things 2 do.

Hey Ur In My Blind Spot!

Today was a pretty calm day, but I'm going to dedicate this one to the question asked of us regarding our vision. This question was given to us after sitting in the dark for about 7 minutes, observing in the dark , then we covered one eye, walked around the very bright hallway (esp. when compared to the dark room), and lastly, we walked back in the room and opened both eyes. The one that used to be ajusted to the darkness had a blind spot while the other that had ajusted to the light, was now ajusted to the darkness. Criss-crossed huh? Well the question asked was can one's eyes independently operate scotopically while the other operates photopically. Well the first question is how in the world do you pronounce these words (which I still would be struggling with if i didn't hear the question...lol) and what do they mean? After doing a bit of "googling", I realized that the explanation of these two topics would take all night, especially coming from me, but in lame terms, this is what I came up with:

-Scotopically: vision adaptations useful for night time.
-Photopically: vision adaptations useful for daytime.

*Mesopic"ally": The transitional zone between lumiscent and night vision (Dusk vision).

After doing the experiment with myself and skimming through some documents, I found out that your eyes can work independently; one being scotopic and the other being photopic. And the longer you practice, the more your eyes adapt to the situation of observing in both light and darkness. I agreed with this even more after keeping one eye closed in the daylite, walking back in a room of total darkness, and noticing that after about 5-10 minutes, my blindspot was no more.

What's this thing- "workaerobics" you ask? Well it's what I say when you get to work out/exercise/have some sporty fun while at work. After working on the computer with the spreadsheet again, today, we were given the option of continuing our projects or playing volleyball with other faculty, staff, and students at 3 o'clock. So which one to choose...of course volleyball! It's not my fave, but since I've been lacking sports time since school ended, I'll def. take what I can get. And even though it was blazing hot out there (<90> def. worth it-thanks for that.

Hello everybody, it's me again addin on 2 this thing. Well let's see, 4 today, my job here at RIT wasn't as frustrating after getting about a half an our of help from 2 of my advisors (Thank u both very much='s TEAMWORK). Now this part of the project that I am doing doesn't appear 2 be so complicated for any particular reason like it was yesterday (not saying that it won't come become complicated 4 some real reason as the time passes). U see, I'm doing an excel spreadsheet at the moment and am trying to get the data organized, and once again, get some statistical value out of it...the logic of getting these statistics was a bit frustrating, but I think it's simmering down now, or...Maybe this is just the beginning...(to an eventual end)

Working A 9-to-5:Part 1

Let's see...I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure that it looks good to be on time, but in most cases even better if you're approximately 5-10 minutes earlier. (Any comments...feel free)

Well, like I said, I'm definately no expert; in fact, I'm more of a rookie because this is my first true work experience that involves payment in $$'s. This is my first week of work and for my first job, I'd say this isn't bad at all. The payment is reasonable, and I don't have to worry about coming home with any fastfood grease stains if you know what I mean.

So far, I can't complain about the job. I'm on a very nice campus filled with all of the up to date technology. So far in this astronomical field, I'm working on an excel spreadsheet, am organizing it and trying to get some helpful ratios and comparisons from the given data about supernovas and their location in various galaxies. (But maybe I buttered it up a little)

Until a next time, I'll continue "This Thing" some other time, hopefully with some pictures and extra perks.
